"Welcome to the Golden Horn, the gate of the East, the pearl of Bosporus"
At last, you made it to the blessed town of the new Roman Empire: after a long and dangerous trip you found the town the whole world is talking about, Constantinople, or Byzantium as they called it before Constantine 1st founded it in A.D. 330 - more recently called Istanbul. It's a sunny afternoon in May 1453, and ... something is happening in the gem town of the Empire: the Ottoman sultan Muhammad II (the Conqueror) has just conquered it after a long siege, ending the reign (and the life!) of Constantine XI (Palaeologus).
A modern era is said to be starting, miracles are happening! The largest, most splendid European city of this century is built on seven hills rising on the south side of the Golden Horn, an inlet of the Bosporus, ... we have seen this before in another Imperial capital, wasn't it Rome? But that was built on a muddy river, if I remember correctly. Anyway, that was centuries ago!
Join us on this trip around the pearl of the Bosporus, and... don't get lost in the crowd!

"Benvenuti sul Corno d'Oro, alla Porta dell'Est, nella Perla del Bosforo, ...a Istanbul, insomma!"
Ebbene si, ce l'avete fatta: siete finalmente giunti - dopo lungo e periglioso peregrinare - nella capitale dell'Impero Romano d'Oriente, avete davanti a voi la cittą di cui tutto il mondo civilizzato parla, la cittą pił importante dell'Europa contemporanea (bč, un po' al limite dell'Europa, ma non stiamo a sottilizzare).
Siete a Costantinopoli, detta Bisanzio fino alla sua fondazione ufficiale nel 330 d.C. da parte di Costantino I, ed anche chiamata Istanbul, da qualche giorno: cose grandi stanno succedendo in questo assolato pomeriggio di Maggio del 1453 nella gemma dell'Impero! Il sultano Ottomano Maometto II (il Conquistatore) l'ha appena conquistata dopo un lungo assedio che ha posto fine al regno (e anche alla vita, poveretto) di Costantino XI Paleologo, l'ultimo Imperatore Romano. Dicono che stia iniziando un'era nuova, ed accadono cose meravigliose in questa gemma di metropoli costruita su sette colli in riva al Bosforo. ('sta storia di capitali imperiali costruite su sette colli si ripete, vero? Ma lą c'era un fiume fangoso, se ricordo bene. In ogni caso, é roba vecchia di secoli!)
