Ovviamente Cabral l'ha presa per un'isola, che ha chiamato Isola di Vera Cruz, e ne prende possesso in nome del suo re, il Portoghese Manuel il Grande. Sembra che ripartirą presto, rotta a sud-est, direzione Capo di Buona Speranza, poi Mozambico, Calcutta! Ma si, che vada! Da queste parti non mancheranno certo i navigatori, nei prossimi cento anni. Le scialuppe che stanno portando l'ammiraglio a terra sono azionate a vapore, con moderne caldaie italiane: sembra che, se si riuscirą ad usarle per pił dei dieci minuti attuali, le monteranno anche sulle navi grandi. Chissą dove finiremo, con questa tecnologia!
