It’s August 8th, 1588: an imposing fleet, led by the Duke Medina Sidonia, threatens the English coast. Philip II, King of Spain, sent it to give a lesson to Elizabeth Tudor, Queen of England for the past thirty years. The capital execution of Marie Stuart, beheaded in 1587, must be revenged! (Or is it because of the support given in Europe to the Dutch Protestants and to the French Huguenots? Or maybe because of the regular beating that the Spanish galleons get – on their way back from South America, loaded with gold – from the pirates patented by the English Crown? Who knows? Anyway.) These 30,000 men on 130 ships have been named “The Invincible Armada” : will they succeed in their mission? Things have gone sour, so far, in the Channel. The Spanish, on heavy ships - unfit for sea fighting, have gone ashore on the sand banks of Calais and Flanders, and they have lost quite a lot of their forces. English ships are faster and better manoeuvred, and tackle them closely aided by the wind. Follow us, let us see how the Englishmen are getting ready to defend their holy land!
