On this sunny day of June 1667 and in front of St. Peter’s Basilica – finished only forty years ago – a great event takes place: the new Pope makes His first appearance. One step back: Pope Alexander 7th died last month, without seeing the completion of his last project – the colossal Doric colonnades, four columns deep for a total of 284 columns and 88 pillars, framing a giant square, 240 meters wide - as large as the Coliseum. Lorenzo Bernini, the master and designer, can be proud of his achievement: with its elliptic shape the colonnades surrounding St. Peter’s square perfectly render his concept of “the maternal arms of Mother Church”. The new Pope has been elected quickly and is now performing His first parade on the square, proudly standing on the Pope-steam-mobile. He is escorted by Swiss and Noble Guards, while Cardinals and Bishops follow him among two rows of cheering people. He’s not a Roman, and many of these folks come from His land: they have travelled a long way to celebrate His coronation; they are Bavarians, don’t call them Germans! Angelic Choirs of nuns, friars and priests give praise unto God, thanking Him for the gift of a new boss. After all, he’s the one who pays all the bills, around here!
