Under the imposing symbols of the Vatican – the Basilica of St. Peter, the Sistine Chapel, the Loggias of Raphael and the Apostolic Building, where the Pope lives – business flows as usual: all the specialities of Rome and surrounding regions are sold to the pilgrims, tourists and local folks in a coloured and noisy market. Juicy soups, flavoured salamis, fresh mozzarella and seasoned cheese, roasted pigs and other delicacies sell like …hot cakes! Four wagons have just arrived, full of pilgrims – hungry after the long trip but also eager to see the new Pope: will the flesh prevail …or the soul? Other Bavarian pilgrims have parked their three wagons on the opposite side of the ellipse, and are marching martially towards their important fellow countryman. More coloured stalls on the left lure the crowd with their flavours and gastronomic temptations. Under beach umbrellas – featuring their soccer team’s colours – the supporters of the two town’s teams exchange the usual pleasant gestures, promising each other to settle things once at the stadium, after this quick pizza-stop. The towering Egyptian obelisk placed right in the middle of the square keeps everything under control from its height: it’s thirty centuries old and has seen Nero playing his lyre in the Circus, how can it be impressed by just another Pope?

All’ombra degli imponenti simboli Vaticani – la Basilica di San Pietro, la Cappella Sistina, le Logge di Raffaello e i Palazzi Apostolici, residenza del Papa – il business prospera come al solito. Tutte le specialitą di Roma e dintorni vengono vendute a pellegrini, turisti e popolani in un colorato e vociante mercato. Zuppe saporite, salumi speziati, formaggi freschi e stagionati, porchetta e pajata si vendono …come i panini! Quattro vagoni sono appena arrivati, pieni di pellegrini affamati per il lungo viaggio ma anche ansiosi di rendere omaggio al nuovo Papa: vincerą la carne o lo spirito? Altre bancarelle, sulla sinistra, attirano la folla con i loro profumi e le tentazioni della gola. Alcuni ombrelloni – con i colori delle due squadre locali – riparano alcuni tifosi durante il pranzo: si scambiano segnali amichevoli, si rammentano a vicenda madri compiacenti ed antenati defunti e …sistemeranno i conti pił tardi, allo stadio. Altri viaggiatori Bavaresi hanno parcheggiato dall’altro lato della piazza: incuranti delle tentazioni, marciano in modo marziale incontro all’illustre conterraneo. L’imponente obelisco Egiziano in mezzo alla piazza tiene tutto sotto controllo dall’alto dei suoi trenta secoli di vita: lui ha visto Nerone suonare la lira al Circo, volete che si impressioni solo per un altro Papa? Lui non fa una piega!
