Behind the scenes there are people at work to make things happen: the colonnade’s roof is taking shape, made with modern Polyurethane tiles moulded in a high-productivity Rota carousel (below). With this output capacity the job can be completed in weeks, not in years as before! Then – dare to blame the Roman’s efficiency! The wine of the hills surrounding Rome (“I Castelli”) is a best seller, and special containers have been designed to distribute it more rationally: they are thermoformed with heat and vacuum, using a new method able to give shape to two sheets of plastic in a single operation. The two halves are welded together while they are still hot – the heat is provided by a powerful coal-fired boiler, see? – forming a hollow container, that is brought automatically to the finishing station. Here the flask – well, it’s actually called a “damigiana” or demi-john – is trimmed manually and, properly protected with thin wood strips and straw, is forwarded to the filling station. A couple of specialists perform the delicate task without wasting much of the precious nectar… well, that little which might overflow is not lost anyway! Above, a moulding press leaves the Cannon building: it was the last of this type to be made around here, and is wished farewell on its way out.
