All these nobles need some entertainment, right? Then, His Majesty offers them naval war-games, occasionally. Today, a battle between three French and two British ships takes place: high-ranking aristocrats are carried here on sedan chairs by their valets, to cheer and support their heroes with other blueblood folk, guards, clergy and mere normal people. Let them enjoy this moment: the pond of the Parterre d’Eau is the only place where they will be able to beat the Brits, it seems! Other folks nearby work, in the meantime: flexible foam mattresses are produced at high speed, with a compact, revolving block-foam maker. They will be cut with an ingenious hand-driven horizontal saw and delivered to the crowded bedrooms of the Chateau: lodging for the Court is not the premium feature of the vast building, we have been told! They sleep (and do many other things!) where they can, also in corridors and closets! What a tough life, being a member of the Royal Court: hunting for a salary and a pension, many nobles try to find a job acting as supervisors. They control the work of less fortunate folk, interfering with their work and distributing unwanted and incompetent suggestions: if this becomes a common practice we’ll have a tough time, in the years to come! Well, folks, that is it, for this year: Le Roi Soleil wishes you his most graceful Adieu! Who knows where we’ll meet next year?! This Old World is so crowded!

Tutta questa nobiltà dovrà pur divertirsi, no? E Le Roi offre loro, ogni tanto, una bella battaglia navale: oggi si gioca fra tre battelli francesi contro due Inglesi. Facile… Cortigiane d’alto rango arrivano qui in portantina per fare il tifo per gli eroi locali – insieme ad altri nobili, clero, guardie, e gente più normale. Ma sì, che si divertano: la vasca del Parterre d’Eau è l’unico posto dove riusciranno a battere gli Inglesi, per un bel pezzo! Ma non mancano i lavoratori veri, qui attorno: con una compatta macchina a due stampi rotanti si producono materassi in schiuma flessibile. Saranno subito tagliati, lì vicino, con una speciale sega orizzontale e finiranno nelle affollate stanze dello Chateau: gli alloggi per la Corte non sono molti, ci dicono i bene informati! Qui si dorme (e si fa molto altro) dove capita, anche in corridoi e ripostigli: la vita è dura, per i poveri Cortigiani! Per pagarsi i vizi e garantirsi una pensione si adattano a fare piccoli lavori, generalmente come sovrintendenti. Controllano persone di rango inferiore, interferiscono nel loro lavoro, dando consigli incompetenti e non richiesti: se li lasciano fare diventa un’abitudine che creerà problemi seri, un giorno! Va bene, bella gente: anche per quest’anno il giro turistico lo abbiamo fatto, e Le Roi Soleil si congeda da noi con un grazioso Adieu! Chissà dove ci ritroveremo l’anno prossimo?! Questo Vecchio Mondo si è fatto un po’ stretto, non sembra anche a voi? Bah, vedremo…

Il faut pourtant offrir à toute cette noblesse des divertissements inédits... Aujourd’hui, c’est une belle bataille navale qui se joue entre trois navires français battant pavillons à fleurs de lys et deux navires anglais arborant (déjà!) l’Union Jack. Des courtisanes de haut rang arrivent en chaises à porteur pour acclamer et soutenir leurs héros, en même temps que d’autres nobles, des représentants du clergé, et des Gardes Royaux portant, eux aussi, l’étendard à fleurs de lys. C’est un grand moment, ce Parterre d’Eau est bien le seul lieu où la Flotte Française va réussir à battre les Anglais … Non loin de là, des travailleurs se consacrent, au moyen d’une installation constituée d’une machine compacte et de deux porte-moules rotatifs, à la production à grande échelle de matelas en mousse flexible qui sont ensuite découpés là, juste à côté, au moyen d’un système ingénieux de scie horizontale, et immédiatement livrés dans les chambres bondées du Château. Les gens bien informés savent que les logements n’y sont pas pléthoriques, on y dort (ou on y fait ce que la bienséance nous interdit de préciser ici) là où on peut, parfois dans les corridors ou les débarras. Oui, la vie est dure pour les pauvres Courtisans! Il leur faut, pour trouver des moyens de subsistance, se livrer à de petits travaux, ou mieux encore: exercer une fonction de Surintendant qui leur permet de contrôler des personnes de rang inférieur, d’interférer dans leur travail, de donner des conseils (non requis) en toute incompétence! Si on les laisse faire, cela risque de devenir une habitude qui créera, un jour à venir, de sérieux problèmes! Mais n’anticipons pas, bonnes gens: pour cette année la visite est terminée et le Roi Soleil nous congédie d’un royal « Adieu! » Qui sait où nous nous retrouverons l’an prochain dans ce Vieux Monde devenu si étroit! Alors … qui vivra verra!
