Shelley Thermoformers International Limited was formed in North London in 1956 (then known as M.L. Shelley & Partners Ltd) as a contract drawing office. The Company developed an expertise for the printing industry and also had some exposure to the packaging industry.
When plastic packaging began to be developed, the Company designed a vacuum forming machine. This won a Silver Award at the Brussels Inventors' Exhibition and the Company was stimulated to expand its effort into the emerging plastic industry.
In the late 1950's, the Company was bought by the Alexander Group of Companies. New technical and management staff were appointed and the Company moved to Grove Works, still in North London. The Company wanted to develop into industries where thermoforming could be successfully used and where the influence of the packaging background of the Company could be minimised.
In the early 1960's, proposed road developments threatened the factory site and, as a result, in 1965 Shelley moved to Huntingdon. In 1969 Alexander took a more direct role in the running of the Company, but in 1971 it was sold to a consortium of stock brokers and a new managing director was appointed. The Company developed rapidly from 1971 and was sold again to a private consortium in 1977 and again to the Deacon Industrial Group in 1979. The Company experienced a downturn of business activity during the recession of the early 1980’s, but was able to stabilise its activities during this period. The original factory site had by now been outgrown, so the Company moved to its current site, Stonehill, Stukeley Meadows Industrial Estate, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, in January 1982. In 1986 there was a 'management buyout'.
In August 1988, the Cannon Plastic Technology Group acquired Shelley Thermoformers to complement their existing activities in the plastics industry and the Company continues to undergo expansion.
Product Range
In recent times the Company has concentrated exclusively on industrial thermoforming. A range of industrial machines is available from simple manually loaded single heater types to fully automatic high speed multi-station types.
